Sorta book-review on “The Road”: The Wooden and the True

Sorta book-review
.n

  1. An attempt to review a book without really knowing anything about it other than having read it.
  2. A review that speaks to the experience, but should not be taken seriously, at least for the most part.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Recently, and by recently I mean like a month ago, I finished reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It only took me about 4 months to finish reading, mostly due to the fact that I would only read it for about 10 minutes once every weekday on my short LRT ride from Bay Station to Health Sciences. I’m not much of a “sit at home and read” kind of guy, but, from what I remember, this was an interesting read. Continue Reading…

Bergtrax 4000 Vol. 02: Rest in Peace Good Friend

For Bergtrax 4000: Vol. 02 I’m bringing you 8 tracks from artists who have, at least for now, called it quits. There might be other, more notable artists not featured here, but these are the ones that hurt me the most. At least one of them, The Progress, had broken up before I even started listening to them.

Yet regardless of the fact that these bands aren’t together anymore, I still listen to their albums on a regular basis. You probably haven’t heard of most of these artists, and therein lies the tragedy in their break-ups. There’s still a good chance you wouldn’t have heard of them even if they released more albums but I’d like to think all of them would have had their chance to make it big (some, of course, did). Here’s the tracklisting:

  1. Further Seems Forever – Light Up Ahead (Hide Nothing)
  2. The June Spirit – Prologue (Testing Superstition)
  3. Belvedere – Slaves to the Pavement (Fast Forward Eats the Tape)
  4. Small Brown Bike – Blank Landscapes (Nail Yourself to the Ground)
  5. The Progress – Similar Haircuts (Merit)
  6. Park – Gasoline Kisses for Everyone (It Won’t Snow Where You’re Going)
  7. Choke – Tired ([Foreword])
  8. The Receiving End of Sirens – The War of All Against All (Between the Heart and the Synapse)

The End of the Twitter Daily Update Blog Posts

Here’s the scoop peeps. I originally thought that by adding a post that posted my twitter updates from the day before would give any potential readers the ability to see what I’m up to in a micro-blogging type of way. I rarely have the time to sit down and write a meaningful entry in here, which saddens me, but the format of simply posting little tidbits of info, up to 140 characters in length, makes those brief moments during the day where I’m not doing anything into an actual posting opportunity, just not anything of depth or substance.

But it has now simply become depressing for me to look at my own website and see an entire front page of just Twitter updates. I can imagine that coming to my site and only seeing my tweets from the previous day a little bit underwhelming for a new visitor. Besides, if you navigate to the sidebar or to My Lifestream you can see everything that I’m up to in almost real-time, including my Twitter updates, Last.FM latest plays, Delicious bookmarks, Google Reader shared items, YouTube favourites and videos, flickr photos, Picasa web albums, TwitPic photos, Facebook status updates, and Xbox Live achievements (although I don’t think that one’s working at the moment).

If you’re wondering how to get to my lifestream, simply click the tab where it says “brendan” near the top of this page, or below the 10 latest updates in my sidebar. Easy peasy right?

So I won’t make any promises other than the one I’ve made to myself: to post 3 meaningful updates per week. That’s all I feel I can ask of myself right now, and if I have to do so, perhaps I’ll make it a belated New Year’s Resolution (of which I’ve made none in the past 5 or 6 years out of spite).

Extreme Makeover: Main Floor Bedrooms Edition

For the past year or so I’ve been hounding Heather to give up her “room” so I can move my computer, etc into her room and convert it into an office/spare bedroom. I also wanted to get our bed off the wall and out of the corner so one of us wouldn’t have to crawl over the other to get in and out. She finally agreed to it after we got engaged gave me a deadline to have it done by the time she returned from her practicum, which happened to be this past Saturday. Being an expert in time management I left it until Friday to get started. I took the day off work to work on it but it ended up taking until Saturday evening to finish. Continue Reading…
